Gallaecian and northwestern castro communities

Local names varied; Gallaeci is a Roman collective label

Northwestern Iberia contained many hillfort communities whose houses, walls, craft, exchange, and ritual practices changed from the Iron Age into Roman rule. Citânia de Briteiros is a Portuguese reference site within a much wider and internally varied landscape.

Aperçu

Géographie historique, organisation politique et transformation

Géographie historique

Fortified settlements occur across the northwest in diverse coastal, river, and upland landscapes. Their archaeological distribution exceeds and complicates later Roman administrative categories.

Organisation politique et échelle communautaire

Evidence supports households, neighborhoods, fortified settlements, and possible local central places. It does not establish one Gallaecian state or a single political system shared by every castro.

Transformation de l'époque romaine et réception ultérieure

Many castros continued, expanded, contracted, or changed function under Roman rule. The later name Gallaecia and modern Galicia do not create automatic political, cultural, or biological continuity.

Reference settlement Citânia de Briteiros

A protected fortified settlement used here for orientation within a transboundary northwestern archaeological context.

Category distinction Castro culture is not one tribe

The archaeological label organizes settlement evidence and cannot define uniform language, government, or identity.

Current archaeological interpretation [S2] [S3]
Roman-era change Continuity and reorganization occurred together

Visible structures at major sites often include substantial Roman-period phases.

Uma cronologia breve e documentada

Ces repères servent d'orientation et ne constituent pas une histoire complète.

  1. Hillfort settlement traditions emerge

Fortified settlements developed in varied northwestern landscapes; chronology and form differ substantially by region.

Sites such as Briteiros and San Cibrao de Las show denser occupation and more complex spatial organization.

  3. Roman military control expands

Campaigns and imperial administration reshaped political and economic relations across the northwest.

  4. Castro and Roman practices coexist

Some hillforts remained active while roads, mining, towns, inscriptions, and new legal structures altered regional life.

Culture et langue

Langues mentionnées dans ce profil

  • Latin under Roman rule

Famille linguistique: Palaeohispanic Indo-European evidence and Latin

Round and rectangular buildings at Briteiros belong to changing construction phases rather than a timeless house type.

Large castros could serve as central places, but regional political hierarchy remains a research question.

Roman administration reused names and reorganized settlement without erasing all local practice at once.

Objects, scripts, names, and settlement patterns can document contact and change, but none alone proves a fixed ethnic identity or population boundary.
