Late Nuragic communities of Sardinia

Nuragic is a modern archaeological term derived from nuraghe

Su Nuraxi’s stone towers and surrounding settlement began before this atlas’s main period but remained important background for late Bronze and Iron Age communities. Across Sardinia, local societies changed through distinct settlement, craft, ritual, and Mediterranean contact histories rather than one uniform Nuragic polity.

Aperçu

Géographie historique, éléments probants et communautés cambiantes

Géographie historique et connexions méditerranéennes

Nuraghe and related sites occur across Sardinia in varied ecological and settlement contexts; the island also participated in long-distance Mediterranean exchange.

Organisation politique et échelle communautaire

Archaeology supports households, villages, sanctuaries, craft networks, and changing forms of leadership. Monument similarity does not prove one island-wide centralized Nuragic state.

Transformation de l'époque romaine et réception ultérieure

Su Nuraxi is protected Sardinian and world heritage. Archaeological continuity does not adjudicate modern Sardinian ethnicity, regional identity, or individual descent.

Term type Modern archaeological classification

Nuragic is not a documented self-name for one people.

Current heritage interpretation [S1] [S2]
Chronology caution Major construction began before 1200 BCE

Earlier architecture appears only as necessary background to later communities.

Current UNESCO record [S1] [S2] [S3]
Political caution No demonstrated island-wide centralized state

Shared monuments do not prove uniform government, language, or identity.

Uma cronologia breve e documentada

Ces repères servent d'orientation et ne constituent pas une histoire complète.

  1. Su Nuraxi’s central monument develops

Major tower construction began before the collection’s main period and provides necessary background rather than defining all later communities.

  2. Settlement and monument use change

Communities adapted built spaces, households, production, and regional connections after initial construction.

  3. Island and Mediterranean networks intensify

Metalwork, sanctuaries, settlements, and coastal exchange document varied local choices and external contacts.

  4. Punic and Roman contexts reshape Sardinian communities

Political, economic, and cultural change remained geographically and socially uneven.

Culture et langue

Langue, écriture, croyances et culture matérielle en contexte

Langues mentionnées dans ce profil

  • Pre-Roman Sardinian languages are not securely recoverable from the architecture
  • Phoenician and Punic in connected coastal contexts
  • Latin in later periods

Famille linguistique: Undetermined for the communities represented by Nuragic architecture

The central tower’s construction predates much of the collection period and is included as necessary architectural background.

Later settlement around the monument documents changing domestic and communal use.

Phoenician and Punic encounters involved coastal and inland communities with their own agency rather than automatic replacement.

A language, script, object style, burial practice, city name, or ancient ethnonym cannot by itself establish a fixed ethnic population or boundary.
