Yangshao communities and Banpo

Yangshao (仰韶) and Banpo (半坡)

Yangshao-period settlements across parts of northern China varied in houses, storage, burial, pottery, cultivation, and exchange. Banpo provides one well-known settlement context but cannot represent every community assigned to the broad classification.

Aperçu

Éléments probants, desarrollo régional, organisation politique et transformation

Géographie historique et régions connectées

River terraces and loess landscapes supported millet cultivation, animal management, gathering, hunting, craft production, and exchange among diverse settlements.

Organisation politique et échelle communautaire

Households and village institutions organized cultivation, storage, craft, burial, and exchange; evidence for hierarchy varies and does not demonstrate one centralized Yangshao polity.

Transformation impériale et réception ultérieure

Yangshao and Banpo are archaeological research terms and sites; neither establishes modern identity, language, territory, or ancestry.

Reference point Banpo

One settlement within a broad and varied archaeological classification.

Uma cronologia breve e documentada

Ces repères servent d'orientation et ne constituent pas une histoire complète.

  1. Yangshao-period sequences develop

Settled communities expanded across several river valleys with marked regional variation.

  2. Banpo settlement grows

Houses, pits, ditches, craft, and mortuary areas document one village history near the Wei River.

  3. Regional forms diversify

Settlement scale, pottery, burial, and exchange changed differently across the broad Yangshao classification.

  4. Later regional sequences emerge

New archaeological classifications followed unevenly; the transition does not prove one population replacement.

Culture et langue

Subsistance, travail, écriture, rituales, mobilité et vie sociale

Langues mentionnées dans ce profil

  • No written language corpus

Famille linguistique: Unknown; pottery styles cannot establish language or ethnicity

Painted pottery varies by place and period and is not an ethnic badge.

Households, pits, and cemeteries reveal community organization at different scales.

Millet farming coexisted with other food practices and regional exchange.

The surviving record is uneven. Monumental sites, elite tombs, bronze and jade, inscribed objects, and imperial archives can be unusually visible, while households, children, gendered work, farmers, craftspeople, mobile communities, corvée laborers, enslaved or bonded people, and spoken languages are harder to reconstruct.
