Métis

The Métis Nation emerged as a distinct Indigenous people through kinship, commerce, community, culture, language, and political action in the historic northwest. Winnipeg and Red River provide an historical orientation point; contemporary Métis governments have their own citizenship rules and mandates.

Territoires d'origine, gobernanza et continuité culturelle

Territoires historiques d'origine et réseaux régionaux

Métis communities developed along river, trade, buffalo-hunt, and kinship networks across the historic northwest, with Red River an important political and cultural center but not the only homeland.

Gouvernance et organisation politique

Contemporary Métis governments and representative bodies operate through constitutions, assemblies, elected leadership, registries, and negotiated arrangements. Their jurisdictions and citizenship definitions are institution-specific and cannot be supplied or adjudicated by this atlas.

Institutions contemporaines et continuité culturelle

Métis citizens and communities maintain governments, education, harvesting, language, arts, and cultural institutions across several provinces and territories. Self-identification, census identity, organizational citizenship, and legal tests are not interchangeable.

Peoplehood A distinct Indigenous people

Métis identity is not synonymous with any mixed ancestry; communities and governments define their own citizenship.

Famille linguistique: Mixed Cree-French language varieties; Indo-European and Indigenous multilingual contexts

Métis peoplehood developed collectively and politically; it is not a mathematical ancestry fraction.

Michif names several related language varieties with different regional histories and levels of use.

Red River is a major reference context, not a claim that every Métis community has the same origin or government.

Living peoples decide what knowledge is public. The absence of a practice, place, or account from this concise profile is not evidence that it is absent from the community.
