Tartessian communities
Tartessos (conventional scholarly label)
Tartessian archaeology encompasses changing communities of southwestern Iberia whose settlements, buildings, burials, metalwork, and Mediterranean connections are interpreted alongside later Greek testimony. Huelva and La Joya provide a reference context rather than the location of one proven Tartessian capital.
Geografía histórica, organización política y transformación
Geografía histórica
Archaeological contexts extend through parts of the lower Guadalquivir, Huelva, the Guadiana basin, Extremadura, and southern Portugal. The Huelva marker orients readers to La Joya and museum collections, not to a fixed Tartessian frontier.
Organización política y escala comunitaria
Evidence supports several centers, elite households, sanctuaries, and regional networks. It does not establish one continuous kingdom, capital, or political system across every site called Tartessian.
Transformación de época romana y recepción posterior
Tartessian material traditions changed substantially during the sixth and fifth centuries BCE. Later authors and modern scholarship reused Tartessos in different ways; none supplies a direct modern identity or descent claim.
The marker represents an archaeological and museum context, not a confirmed capital of all Tartessian communities.
Current research examines regional buildings, burials, settlements, and networks rather than searching only for one city.
Writing evidence cannot be converted into a complete account of language, government, or group identity.

Monumental buildings in the Guadiana region
Excavated adobe complexes demonstrate that Tartessian research concerns several landscapes and forms of organization.

Familia lingüística: Palaeohispanic and Phoenician evidence; classification remains debated
La Joya’s burials document differentiated funerary practice and Mediterranean-connected objects without functioning as a census of society.
Buildings in the middle Guadiana broaden Tartessian archaeology beyond an imagined single coastal city.
Greek narratives about wealth and rulers are later literary testimony and must be separated from excavated evidence.
Objects, scripts, names, and settlement patterns can document contact and change, but none alone proves a fixed ethnic identity or population boundary.
