Erlitou and early Bronze Age state formation
Erlitou (二里头)
Erlitou preserves planned roads, large compounds, workshops, burials, bronze and jade production, and regional exchange associated with early state formation. Archaeology establishes a major center but not the site's dynastic name, language, or every resident's identity.
Evidencias, desarrollo regional, organización política y transformación
Geografía histórica y regiones conectadas
The Yiluo basin connected river agriculture, craft production, Central Plains settlements, and routes toward the Loess Plateau and other regional centers.
Organización política y escala comunitaria
Planned spaces, palatial compounds, workshops, and unequal burials indicate centralized institutions and labor control, but recovered evidence does not securely name the polity or define one ethnicity.
Transformación imperial y recepción posterior
Erlitou is central to archaeological debates about early states. It cannot prove legendary genealogy, modern identity, ethnic continuity, territory, or ancestry.
A major early Bronze Age center, not a securely named Xia capital.
Radiocarbon and archaeological sequences continue to be refined.
Later texts and excavated evidence must remain analytically separate.

- No secure locally written corpus
- Later dynastic texts require separate attribution
Familia lingüística: Unknown; archaeological classification cannot establish spoken language
Roads and large compounds document planned institutional space.
Bronze and jade production combined specialized labor with regional connections.
Xia identification is a historical argument, not an archaeological fact built into the profile.
The surviving record is uneven. Monumental sites, elite tombs, bronze and jade, inscribed objects, and imperial archives can be unusually visible, while households, children, gendered work, farmers, craftspeople, mobile communities, corvée laborers, enslaved or bonded people, and spoken languages are harder to reconstruct.
