Story

The narrative of this ancient life

The contemporary era of Sri Lanka is characterized by a tapestry of cultural richness, diverse ethnicities, and significant socio-economic transformations. Positioned strategically in the Indian Ocean, this island nation bridges the cultures of South and Southeast Asia, while also integrating global influences in the modern era.

Political Landscape

Modern Sri Lanka has seen a dynamic political landscape characterized by efforts to reconcile its multi-ethnic society post-civil war. The end of the Sri Lankan Civil War in 2009 marked a significant point in history, transitioning the nation towards recovery and reconciliation. Contemporary Sri Lankan politics is defined by democratically elected governments striving for economic stability and national unity, although challenges remain in balancing ethnic and political tensions, predominantly between the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil minority.

Economy

Economically, Sri Lanka has transitioned from a predominantly agricultural economy to a more diversified one with significant contributions from services, manufacturing, and tourism. The service sector is a major part of the economy, driven by finance, information technology, and telecommunications which have seen considerable growth. The tea industry remains a staple, with Sri Lanka being one of the largest tea producers globally. Tourism also plays a critical role, attracting visitors to its pristine beaches, historical sites, and rich biodiversity.

Social Dynamics

Socially, contemporary Sri Lanka is marked by its efforts towards promoting multiculturalism while dealing with the repercussions of years of civil unrest. Education and literacy rates are relatively high compared to many other South Asian countries, which has played a role in societal progression. The education system continuously evolves, aiming to create a more skilled workforce that can compete globally. Urbanization is on the rise, with cities like Colombo expanding rapidly, contributing to significant changes in lifestyle and societal values.

Cultural Heritage and Modernity

Sri Lanka is renowned for its rich cultural heritage rooted in various traditions and religions, with Buddhism being the predominant influence. Temples and religious festivals remain integral to social life, providing continuity with the past. The arts, especially dance and music, have modern iterations that blend traditional elements with contemporary expressions, seen in popular culture and media. Modern Sri Lankan cinema and literature have gained international recognition, often exploring themes of identity, conflict, and resilience.

Technological Advancements

Technological progression is a significant aspect of modern Sri Lanka. The IT sector has emerged rapidly, contributing to economic growth and modernization of various industries. The government has initiated several digital transformation projects aiming to enhance public services and promote tech-driven entrepreneurship among the youth.

Environmental Awareness

Sri Lanka's exceptional biodiversity and ecological wealth are coupled with contemporary challenges like climate change, deforestation, and sustainable development. There is an increasing awareness and active engagement in conservation efforts and sustainable tourism to preserve its natural heritage. This is evident in policy initiatives and community-led conservation programs.

Cuisine

Sri Lankan cuisine in the contemporary era remains a flavorful blend of spices, reflecting its historical trade significance and cultural amalgamation. While traditional dishes like rice and curry, kottu, and hoppers remain staples, there is a growing trend of fusion cuisine, merging local tastes with international culinary practices.

International Relations

On the global stage, Sri Lanka plays a pivotal role due to its geostrategic location. The country maintains a non-aligned foreign policy, seeking to strengthen economic partnerships and regional cooperation, notably within the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and bilateral relatios with countries like China and India.

In summary, the contemporary era of Sri Lanka is a period of transformation marked by the reconciliation of its historical past with the aspirations of modernity. It is a complex interplay of preserving cultural heritage while embracing change, striving for economic growth, and promoting social cohesion in a multi-ethnic society.

A global reference for human genetic variation

Authors Auton A, Brooks LD, Durbin RM
Abstract

The 1000 Genomes Project set out to provide a comprehensive description of common human genetic variation by applying whole-genome sequencing to a diverse set of individuals from multiple populations. Here we report completion of the project, having reconstructed the genomes of 2,504 individuals from 26 populations using a combination of low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, deep exome sequencing, and dense microarray genotyping. We characterized a broad spectrum of genetic variation, in total over 88 million variants (84.7 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 3.6 million short insertions/deletions (indels), and 60,000 structural variants), all phased onto high-quality haplotypes. This resource includes >99% of SNP variants with a frequency of >1% for a variety of ancestries. We describe the distribution of genetic variation across the global sample, and discuss the implications for common disease studies.
