The President, elected by the citizens, holds a prominent role in foreign and domestic policy, while the Prime Minister manages the day-to-day operations of the government. France is an active member of the European Union, NATO, the United Nations, and other international organizations, playing a key role in global diplomacy and security.

Economy

Modern France boasts one of the largest economies in the world. It is a leading nation in sectors such as agriculture, aerospace, automotive, luxury goods, and tourism. France is known for its robust public sector, social welfare systems, and a mixed economy that combines private enterprise with substantial state involvement. Paris, the capital, is a global financial hub, hosting numerous multinational corporations and institutions.

However, France continues to grapple with issues of integration, identity, and social cohesion, balancing the secular values enshrined in its republic with its diverse demographic.

Rooted in Enlightenment values such as liberty, equality, and fraternity, modern France upholds these principles while navigating the complexities of a globalized world. The French are proud of their heritage, language, and contributions to the global arts and sciences, continually striving to maintain their cultural distinctiveness.

The complete genome sequence of a Neanderthal from the Altai Mountains

Authors Prüfer K, Racimo F, Patterson N
Abstract

We present a high-quality genome sequence of a Neanderthal woman from Siberia. We show that her parents were related at the level of half-siblings and that mating among close relatives was common among her recent ancestors. We also sequenced the genome of a Neanderthal from the Caucasus to low coverage. An analysis of the relationships and population history of available archaic genomes and 25 present-day human genomes shows that several gene flow events occurred among Neanderthals, Denisovans and early modern humans, possibly including gene flow into Denisovans from an unknown archaic group. Thus, interbreeding, albeit of low magnitude, occurred among many hominin groups in the Late Pleistocene. In addition, the high-quality Neanderthal genome allows us to establish a definitive list of substitutions that became fixed in modern humans after their separation from the ancestors of Neanderthals and Denisovans.
