党项人的族源问题一直颇有争议.2000-2001年宁夏文物考古研究所对闽宁村西夏墓地进行发掘,据出土碑文考证其为西夏早期党项野利氏家族墓地.对闽宁村西夏墓地M7夫妇合葬墓的两具人骨材料进行古DNA分析研究,M7男性个体的母系来源与氐羌人群有关,而父系来源更接近欧亚草原人群;M7女性个体与北方民族有关,该个体可能来自党项内部与北方民族有关的氏族部落,也可能来自族外人群如与党项混居的吐谷浑等民族,或与西夏政治联姻的其他北方民族.闽宁村西夏墓地M7夫妇合葬墓的古DNA研究为西夏族源及其婚姻网络提供了重要的参考..
