What Are Shared Roots?

Shared Roots explores your genetic connections to ancient individuals—real people who lived thousands of years ago, whose DNA fragments persist in your chromosomes today. This is not modern ethnicity. This is not recent genealogy. Shared Roots reveals the genetic inheritance that has been passed down across thousands of generations, connecting you to the foundational movements of human history.

Through advanced chromosomal segment analysis, we identify genetic similarities between your DNA and authenticated ancient samples spanning 50,000 years—from Paleolithic hunter-gatherers to classical civilizations to medieval populations.

Beyond Modern Borders

The individuals you match lived long before any modern nation-state existed. Their movements crossed territories that would not be named for thousands of years. Your connections span continents and eras.

Before Cultural Identity

Shared Roots traces inheritance that predates the cultures, languages, and traditions we associate with ancestry today. It reveals the genetic substrate beneath all later developments—the deep connections that unite humanity.

What You Get

  • Ranked ancient sample similarities based on shared DNA segments (IBS matching)
  • Interactive chromosome browser showing exact segment locations
  • Era, culture, geographic context for each match
  • Match quality scores based on segment length and density

What This Means

  • Some matches may be IBD (Identical by Descent): inherited from a shared ancestor
  • Some may be IBS (Identical by State): similar DNA patterns that may not indicate a common ancestor
  • Ancient DNA and deep time increase uncertainty—shorter segments are more likely to be IBS
  • Matches indicate genetic similarity, not proof of direct descent from a specific individual

This is an example match format. Your actual results will show your unique connections based on your genetic profile. Match strength and count vary by individual.

How IBS Analysis Works

Shared Roots uses Identical by State (IBS) segment matching—a technique that scans your entire genome for stretches of DNA that are identical to those found in ancient individuals. Here is the journey your DNA takes through our analysis pipeline.

1

DNA Processing

Your raw DNA file is quality-checked and standardized across 600,000+ SNP positions to ensure accurate comparison.

2

Chromosome Scanning

All 22 autosomal chromosomes are scanned to identify continuous segments of matching alleles between you and each ancient sample.

3

Ancient Comparison

Each detected segment is compared against 9,000+ authenticated ancient DNA samples recovered from 3,000+ archaeological sites worldwide.

4

IBS Detection

Identical-by-State segments are identified—contiguous stretches where your alleles match an ancient individual's alleles exactly.

5

Match Scoring

Matches are ranked by segment count, total shared centiMorgans, longest segment length, and SNP density to produce a quality score.

Understanding Your Matches

Understanding the difference between genetic similarity and confirmed ancestry—the key to interpreting your results.

IBS: Identical by State

DNA segments that look the same between two people. This similarity might be due to shared ancestry, but it could also arise from chance or from patterns common in human populations.

  • All matches start as IBS—we detect segment similarity first
  • Short segments are more likely to be coincidental IBS
  • Common in population "pile-up" regions

IBD: Identical by Descent

DNA segments that are the same because they were inherited from a common ancestor. This is what indicates a true genetic relationship.

  • Longer segments are more likely to be true IBD
  • Multiple segments across chromosomes strengthen the signal
  • IBD confirmation requires statistical inference

Important Factors to Consider

Deep Time Effect

Over thousands of years, recombination breaks DNA segments into smaller pieces. Ancient connections become harder to detect and interpret—shorter segments from deeper time are more likely to be IBS.

Population Structure

Some regions show "pile-up" effects where many people share segments due to population bottlenecks or founder effects. These matches may reflect shared population history rather than individual ancestry.

Endogamy

Certain populations with historical intermarriage show elevated segment sharing. If your ancestry includes endogamous groups, you may see more matches that don't indicate unique ancestral connections.

Ancient DNA Quality

Ancient samples vary in DNA preservation. Lower-coverage samples may produce less reliable matches. Our match quality scores account for this uncertainty.

What This Means For You

Your Shared Roots report shows real chromosomal segment overlaps between you and ancient individuals. These are genuine genetic signals—not speculation. However, interpreting whether a match represents a true ancestral connection requires understanding the factors above.

"I'm seeing real segment-level signals that connect me to deep human history—interpreted with honesty."

Match quality indicators in your report reflect segment length, density, and statistical confidence. Higher-quality matches are more likely to represent true IBD relationships.

Questions

Not necessarily. A match indicates that you share DNA segments with an ancient individual, which could mean you share a common ancestor—but it doesn't prove the ancient person is your direct ancestor. The connection might be through a shared population, a common ancestral group, or even coincidental similarity (IBS). Longer, stronger matches are more likely to indicate true shared ancestry, while shorter segments may be coincidental. Think of matches as clues to your deep ancestry, not as proof of a specific family tree.

IBS (Identical by State) means two DNA segments look the same—they have matching genetic sequences. IBD (Identical by Descent) means those matching segments were inherited from a common ancestor. All IBD segments are IBS, but not all IBS segments are IBD. Short segments can match by chance (IBS without being IBD), especially when comparing to ancient DNA from thousands of years ago. Our analysis detects IBS segments and uses statistical methods to assess which ones are likely to be IBD. Longer segments are more likely to be truly inherited from a shared ancestor.

Match quality depends on several factors: Segment length—longer segments are more reliable indicators of shared ancestry. Segment count—multiple segments across different chromosomes strengthen the signal. SNP density—more SNPs in a segment means more data to compare. Ancient sample quality—well-preserved samples with high DNA coverage produce more reliable matches. Our match quality scores combine these factors to help you focus on your most meaningful connections.

The segment detection itself is highly accurate—we're identifying real DNA overlaps between you and ancient samples. The interpretation of what those matches mean requires more nuance. High-quality matches (long segments, high SNP density, multiple chromosomes) are strong evidence of shared ancestry. Lower-quality matches may still be meaningful but carry more uncertainty. We provide match quality indicators and segment details so you can evaluate each connection. Ancient DNA matching is a powerful tool for exploring deep ancestry, but it's probabilistic rather than definitive.

We accept raw DNA files from major testing companies including 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA, Living DNA, and other standard formats. Your DNA file must contain autosomal data. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) files provide the most comprehensive results.

Most Shared Roots reports are ready within 2-24 hours after purchase and file upload, depending on system load. You'll receive an email notification when your report is ready, and you can access it anytime from your account dashboard.
