What is This Report?

The Ancient Global Composition report analyzes how your DNA compares to ancient individuals who lived between 10,000 BC and 1500 AD. Using ADMIXTURE-based analysis, we calculate genetic distance scores that reveal which ancient populations share the most similar genetic profiles to yours.

Unlike chromosome-segment analysis that looks for shared DNA fragments, this report examines your overall ancestry composition and compares it to ancient samples. A lower genetic distance indicates a closer match to your genetic profile.

Time Period: This analysis covers 12,000 years of human history—from early Neolithic farmers to Medieval populations.

Chapter 7

The Science Behind the Analysis

Understanding how we calculate genetic distance and what your results mean.

ADMIXTURE Analysis

We use ADMIXTURE, a maximum likelihood method for inferring ancestry proportions with 20 reference components derived from global human genetic diversity.

Genetic Distance

We calculate Euclidean distance between your ADMIXTURE profile and ancient samples. Lower values indicate closer genetic similarity.

Similarity vs Ancestry

Results show genetic similarity, not direct descent. You share common ancestral populations, but we cannot prove direct genealogical relationships.

Composite Models

Two-way models find the best combination of two ancient populations using a fixed 50/50 split that together explain your genetic makeup.

Mixed Mode Models

Mixed Mode finds optimal variable proportions between two populations (e.g., 70/30, 60/40), particularly useful for complex or distant admixtures.

Why Different Reports Show Different Results
Deep Ancestry Segment Similarity
What a "Match" Means
% of your chromosome segments classified as most similar to this reference population

"Where in my genome do patterns look like ancient samples from this era/place?"

Does not prove
Direct ancestry IBS segment sharing
Ancient Composition Genetic Distance
What a "Match" Means
Euclidean distance between your ADMIXTURE profile and ancient profiles (lower = more similar)

"Which ancient profiles are globally most similar to my overall ancestry composition?"

Does not prove
Shared DNA segments Genealogical links
Shared Roots IBS Segments
What a "Match" Means
% coverage + segment count of DNA regions identical-by-state (IBS) with ancient samples

"Where does my DNA look exactly the same as this ancient individual in specific regions?"

Does not prove
Direct lineage Recent genealogy

Key Takeaway: A sample can rank #1 in one report but lower in another — this isn't a contradiction. Each report answers a different question about your genetic heritage. None prove direct ancestry; they show genetic similarity patterns that suggest your ancient matches came from populations similar to these ancient individuals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about your Ancient Composition Report

Genetic distance measures how different your ADMIXTURE profile is from ancient samples. Lower values = closer match. Lower values indicate closer genetic similarity (0 = identical profiles).

  • <3.0 Exceptional match - very close match with reference populations
  • 3.0-5.0 Close match - close match with reference populations
  • 5.0-6.0 Moderate match - moderately match with some uncertainty
  • >6.0 Distant match - distant match

No, this shows genetic similarity, not direct ancestry. You and these ancient individuals share similar ancestry components, meaning your genetic profiles evolved from similar ancestral populations. However, these specific individuals are not necessarily in your direct family tree. For direct ancestry matching, see our Shared Roots Ancient Matches report.

The Composite Profile models your genetics as a blend of two ancient populations using a fixed 50/50 split. Instead of finding single matches, it identifies the best combination that together explains your genetic makeup. For example, "50% Population A + 50% Population B" means this equal blend closely matches your overall genetic profile.
Mixed Mode finds the optimal variable proportions between two ancient populations (e.g., 70/30, 60/40) rather than using a fixed 50/50 split like the Composite Profile. The algorithm examines all possible combinations of populations and measures genetic distance using the best-fit proportions. This is particularly useful for individuals with complex or distant admixtures, as it can uncover minor genetic contributions from other populations that may have influenced your heritage. For example, even if someone believes they are of 100% Finnish ancestry, Mixed Mode can reveal minor genetic contributions from other populations.
This is common and can be explained by ancient migrations, shared deep ancestry between geographically distant populations, or limitations of the ADMIXTURE model. Focus on patterns rather than individual outliers - multiple matches from a region is a stronger signal than one unexpected match.
Genetic Distance (This Report)

Measures how similar your ADMIXTURE ancestry components are to ancient samples. Lower values = more similar. Shows population-level genetic affinity based on overall ancestry composition.

Segment Matching (Shared Roots Report)

Uses IBS (identical-by-state) chromosomal segment matching to detect shared DNA segments with ancient samples. Higher percentage = more shared DNA. Indicates potential genealogical connection through specific matching segments.

Why might rankings differ? Genetic distance reflects overall population similarity, while IBS segment matching detects specific shared segments. You may be genetically similar to a population without sharing recent ancestors, or share segments with someone from a different population background. Both analyses provide complementary perspectives on your ancient genetic connections.

Think of it this way: Genetic distance tells you "how similar you are overall," while segment matching tells you "which specific DNA pieces you share." Both provide valuable but different perspectives on your ancient connections.

"We carry within us the wonders we seek without us."

— Sir Thomas Browne, 17th century physician and author
