Abstract

Summary of the research findings

The population history of Crete was investigated by analyzing the high-resolution mitochondrial variation of 106 contemporary Cretans, as well as available ancient DNA data. The Cretan maternal gene pool preserves a high diversity, shaped by millennia of migrations, and shows some genetic affinity to European, Middle Eastern and Central Asian populations.
