Abstract

Summary of the research findings

Present-day Mapuche are the largest Indigenous group in Chile, inhabiting territories that have been occupied by hunter-gatherers since the late Pleistocene. We generated genome-wide data from 181 Mapuche and other First Peoples from southern South America. We found that Mapuche ancestry contributed extensively to early Hispanic and current Chilean populations.
