Abstract

Summary of the research findings

Prehistoric population structure associated with the transition to an agricultural lifestyle in Europe remains controversial. We sequenced genomes from a ~7,500-year-old early farmer from southern Sweden and a ~9,500-year-old hunter-gatherer from the same region. We find that the farmer is from a population with a history of genetic admixture between hunter-gatherers and farmers, with about 40% hunter-gatherer ancestry.
