Abstract
Summary of the research findings
Eastern Kazakhstan lies at the intersection of the Eurasian Steppe and the Inner Asian Mountain Corridor but has been comparatively under-studied archaeologically. Recent work in the Kokentau Mountains documented a multi-period sequence at the site of Koken. The article presents preliminary results from initial excavations of settlement and cemetery contexts, supported by radiocarbon dates, revealing a long occupational history from the Mesolithic through the historical period. The authors discuss how integrated evidence from ritual, craft production, and habitation contexts can clarify local timing and trajectories of Bronze Age economic and cultural change in this high steppe region.
