Abstract

Summary of the research findings

Currently known associations between common genetic variants and colorectal cancer explain less than half of its heritability of 25%. As alcohol consumption has a J-shape association with colorectal cancer risk, nondrinking and heavy drinking are both risk factors for colorectal cancer.

4,141 European ancestry heavy drinker cases, 13,979 European ancestry light-to-moderate drinker cases, 13,754 European ancestry nondrinker cases, 5,021 European ancestry heavy drinker controls, 21,658 European ancestry light-to-moderate drinker controls, 15,546 European ancestry nondrinker controls
