Abstract

Summary of the research findings

The Afrikaners are the descendants of European colonists who began to settle in South Africa in 1652. In spite of their predominantly European ancestry, they adopted many aspects of African culture and intermarried with individuals of African and Asian descent. The extent of this admixture was previously studied using Y-chromosome markers, maternal lineages and a limited number of autosomal markers.
